From “Valley of Despair” to Skin Confidence: Ivy’s Clear Skin Story

If you’ve ever struggled with acne, you know it’s rarely just about the skin. It can affect how you feel when you wake up, how you get ready for work, if you want to wear makeup. It not only can impact how you feel but also how you view yourself.

For Ivy, acne had been a part of her life for years. What started in her teens gradually became something she thought about almost every day. She tried products, treatments, supplements, DIY skincare, chemical peels, and plenty of things she found online. Eventually, she realized she didn’t want to rely on skincare as her only hope of achieving clear skin. She wanted to understand what was actually going on.

After more than a year of working with Abby at Clear Skin Lab, Ivy sat down with us to talk honestly about her acne transformation—from the lowest points of her skin journey to feeling confident enough to move forward and focus on other areas of her health.

When Acne Started Affecting More Than Her Skin

Ivy first started experiencing acne when she was around 16. Before the acne became noticeable she remembers having skin she was really happy with. Then, after getting her period, things changed. The acne was different from the occasional pimple most people experience. She describes dealing with deeper, stubborn breakouts primarily around her mouth and chin. Over the years, this progressed to the point where it no longer felt manageable.

By the time Ivy came to Clear Skin Lab, the emotional impact had become just as significant as the physical symptoms.“My mental health was at an all-time low,” she shared. She described feeling anxious and depressed about her skin and said that people around her often didn't understand just how much it affected her.

That's the tricky thing about acne and mental health: other people don't necessarily see what you see. You see your skin every morning when you look in the mirror. You’re focused on every new breakout, change, or mark. You think about what products you can use, whether makeup will make things worse, and whether anyone else is noticing. As Ivy put it, you wake up with it and go to bed with it. That constant mental load can be exhausting.

She Had Tried A Lot

Before working with Clear Skin Lab, Ivy had already spent years trying to figure out her skin. She tried different skincare brands and supplements. She experimented with Chinese herbal supplements she found through social media. She made DIY face masks, and tried some harsher skincare approaches like baking soda masks and charcoal bar soap on her face.

She had also worked with an esthetician she really liked and went through two rounds of six chemical peels while using a professional skincare routine. At one point, benzoyl peroxide became a major part of her routine. She had been using 10% benzoyl peroxide for years.

The problem wasn't that every product or treatment was necessarily “bad.” The problem was that her skin was still struggling. After many different approaches, doing more and more wasn't getting her where she wanted to go.

When More Skincare Wasn't The Right Approach

One of the biggest lessons from Ivy's journey was learning that stronger products didn’t automatically mean better results. When she met with our esthetician at Clear Skin Lab, we looked at her topical routine and focused on supporting her skin barrier rather than constantly throwing more exfoliation at the problem. We started very gentle, and after the skin barrier was supported we brought mandelic acid into her routine. Just like our individual internal approach to acne, the topical routine is also very individualized. It became clear after some adjustments that mandelic wasn't the best fit for her skin.

Her routine became gentler, with a greater focus on supporting the skin barrier and incorporating ingredients like azelaic acid. We began to see very quickly that her skin started improving with less in her topical routine.

Ivy noticed that her skin wasn't constantly feeling dehydrated or red. She no longer felt like her face was so tight that she couldn't move comfortably. After years of assuming she needed stronger products, this was a major mindset shift.

“I think that's something you see so often, even on social media or TikTok,” she said. “People are telling you to use this product, but sometimes less is more.”

We agree with that philosophy: skin isn't a chemistry experiment that needs a new active every time you have a breakout. Sometimes the goal is to simplify.

The “Valley of Despair”

Like many of us on a skin healing journey, Ivy's transformation wasn't a straight line. There were plenty of moments when she wondered whether things were actually getting better.

At Clear Skin Lab, we call this the “valley of despair.”

It's that frustrating part of the journey where you're putting in the work, but the outside results aren't moving as quickly as you'd like. Ivy knows this valley well. “There was a lot of valley of despair for me,” she admitted.

That can be especially difficult when you're used to seeing skincare marketed as an overnight solution.Social media loves the two-week transformation, or a miracle supplement that clears the skin. Working with clients in this space we know real life change is not so easy.

For Ivy, there were times when she looked at her skin and thought it was getting worse—even while her lab markers were continuing to improve. That required a different kind of patience. Instead of judging progress only by what she saw in the mirror that day, she learned to look at the bigger picture and trust the process. After continuing to solidify the foundations and make the right adjustments, she started seeing the results of that patience.

Her Biggest “Aha” Moment Had Nothing to Do With a Skincare Product

One of the most surprising parts of Ivy's story was her realization about eating enough. When she first came to us, she considered herself someone who ate relatively healthy. She was getting protein in with meals and generally trying to make good choices.

When we looked more closely at her food intake, we noticed that she was unintentionally eating very little carbohydrate. For Ivy, learning how to better balance her meals and consistently hit her individualized nutrition targets became a major turning point.

She described previously experiencing shakiness or energy crashes after meals and feeling exhausted during the workday. After making changes to her nutrition, she noticed a significant difference in her day-to-day energy. She could get through work without feeling like she was falling asleep at her desk, and she had more energy for workouts.

That was a huge reminder that a skin transformation isn't always just about skin. Sometimes the “non-skin wins” are what keep you going while you're waiting for your complexion to catch up.

The Mental Transformation Was Just as Big

Today, Ivy says the difference in how she feels mentally is “a world of difference.” She can go to bed without crying about her skin after doing her skincare routine, and wake up without dreading touching her face. She doesn't feel like she has to be afraid of makeup anymore. She’s been able to go to weddings, put on makeup, have fun with it, and actually enjoy herself.

Those might sound like small things to someone who hasn't struggled with acne. To someone who has, they're anything but small. That's the part of an acne transformation that doesn't always show up in before-and-after photos.

Being able to get ready for the day without wondering what your face is going to look like, and feeling like your skin is no longer running the show is a huge life shift.

From Clearing Skin to Building Health

After more than a year of working together, Ivy isn't looking at her journey as “done.” Her skin is now in a place where she feels confident maintaining her progress while turning her attention toward other health goals.

She's continuing with Clear Skin Lab and moving into a new phase of her work focused on maintaining her skin while also supporting areas like hormones, cycle regularity, and other personal health goals. That's one of our favorite parts of this work.

The goal isn't to spend your entire life obsessing over your skin. The goal is to get you to a place where your skin isn't taking up all the mental real estate. Then you can move on to the other things you care about.

What Ivy Would Tell Someone Struggling With Acne

Get professional help.

Ivy feels that she spent years and a lot of money trying things on her own—products, supplements, treatments, and advice from social media. Her point isn't that everyone who tries to manage their skin independently is doing something wrong. It's that there is an overwhelming amount of information out there, and trying to figure out what applies to your body and your skin can be incredibly difficult.

For Ivy, getting individualized support helped her stop guessing. That ultimately saved her time, money, and a lot of frustration.

Her Skin Transformation Was About More Than Clear Skin

Looking back, Ivy's acne transformation isn't just a story about fewer breakouts. It's a story about learning to care for her skin differently.

She now understands that constantly doing more isn't always the answer. She feels confident in knowing how her nutrition can affect how you feel day to day.

Ivy made it through the frustrating stretch when progress isn't obvious. This journey is about rebuilding trust in your skin—and in yourself. Getting to a place where your skin no longer controls how you live your life is a huge accomplishment.

When Ivy looks back at where she was a year ago compared with where she is now, she describes the difference as “night and day.” We couldn't agree more.

Your Skin Doesn't Have to Be Your Whole Story

If you're somewhere in your own “valley of despair” right now, Ivy's story is a good reminder that progress doesn't always happen on the timeline you want. Your journey will also be uniquely yours.

You don't need to copy someone else's supplement routine, skincare regimen, elimination diet, or miracle product just because it worked for them. You certainly don't need to punish your skin into submission. Sometimes the biggest changes come from stepping back, looking at the bigger picture, and figuring out what your body and skin actually need.

The ultimate goal isn't just clearer skin. It's getting your life back.

And Ivy is a pretty great example of what that can look like.
