I Was Told My Psoriasis Was “Just Genetic” and That My Only Option Was an Immunosuppressant for Life. I Cleared It Naturally Instead.
14 Years Later, It's Still Gone.
What a functional registered dietitian wishes more women knew about chronic psoriasis (and the root-cause approach now helping thousands of women see real results without biologics, steroid creams, or tanning beds)

THE OPENING SCENE
I remember the exact chair I was sitting in.
The texture of it. The fluorescent light overhead. The doctor across from me telling me, very calmly, that my psoriasis was “just genetic,” that there was nothing I could do about it, and that the next step was an immunosuppressant injection for the rest of my life.
I was 22 years old.
I had already seen three different dermatologists. I had been on multiple rounds of prednisone (four, maybe five). I had been told to use tanning beds. (Yes, really. When I asked about my family's skin cancer history, the dermatologist said, “You just have to pick your battles.” Cool, doc.)
I had cried in a dermatologist's office the week before a college lake trip, begging for one more round of steroids so I could wear a bikini in front of the guy I had a crush on.
I had hidden my skin from almost everyone for two years. The only people who knew were my mom, my sister, and one girlfriend.
And now here I was, in this chair, being told the rest of my life was either Humira or “pick your battles.”
I cried in the parking lot. Gave myself the moment. But, there had to be a better way.
Then I got pretty stubborn.
There's a Taurus in me. She does not like being told what to do.
That stubbornness is the entire reason I'm sitting here writing this 14 years later, with no psoriasis, no biologics, no tanning beds, and no food eliminations.
WHAT IT ACTUALLY LOOKED LIKE
My own psoriasis at 22, and my skin today (three years flare-free).
Me at 22 — neck and torso
Me today — three years flare-free
I'm not telling you this story from the outside. I lived it.
WHY I'M WRITING THIS
If you're reading this, I'm guessing you're somewhere on the same spiral I was on.
You've seen the dermatologist. Probably more than one. You've used the steroid creams, the prescription topicals, maybe phototherapy. You may have tried biologics. You may be staring down the recommendation right now and praying there's another way.
You've also probably done your own research. Cut gluten. Cut dairy. Bought the supplements. Tried “leaky gut” protocols. Maybe even worked with a functional medicine provider who ran some labs and handed you a stack of supplements and a 30-day reset.
And your skin still flares.
I've been a functional registered dietitian for over a decade now. I co-authored a chapter in the Integrative and Functional Medical Nutrition Therapy textbook. I host the To The Root podcast. I founded The Clear Skin Lab to help women with chronic skin issues figure out what's actually driving them.
And in all that time, in all the hundreds of women I've helped, the same pattern shows up over and over for chronic psoriasis:
The work she's done isn't wrong.
It's just been pointed at the wrong layer of her body.
Here's what I mean.
WHAT YOU'VE PROBABLY ALREADY BEEN TOLD
Most of what's said about psoriasis falls into one of two camps.
Camp 1 (conventional dermatology) tells you:
It's genetic
It's autoimmune
There's no cure
Your only options are steroid creams, immunosuppressants, biologics, or phototherapy
You'll have to manage it for life
Camp 2 (mainstream functional wellness) tells you:
It's a leaky gut issue
Cut gluten, dairy, nightshades, and sugar
Take this turmeric stack
Do this 30-day cleanse
Try this $300/month supplement bundle
If either of those approaches had been the full answer for you, you wouldn't be reading this. You'd be clear.
The truth is, both camps are working with one piece of the puzzle.
Genetics matter. (I have HLA genes that predispose me to psoriasis. I tested for them.) But genes are only part of the story. Diet and lifestyle play a massive role in what those genes actually do.
Gut work matters. So does inflammation. So does immune regulation. But they're all downstream of something most providers never look at.
That something is the layer underneath everything else: cellular foundations.

It’s leaky gut.
It’s your hormones.
Cut the gluten

Generic Protocols
Plugs lab gaps with supplements.
Real role to play. Just never the whole story.
Three approcahes. Different Layers. Different Outcomes.

WHAT'S ACTUALLY DRIVING CHRONIC PSORIASIS
Here is what I learned when I stopped following one camp or the other and went looking for the actual mechanism.
Psoriasis is, at its core, an immune signaling problem. Your immune system is reacting to something it perceives as a threat, and your skin cells are turning over way too fast as a result.
The question that changes everything is: what is your immune system actually reacting to?
In our clinical work at The Clear Skin Lab, we almost never see psoriasis driven by one thing. We see it driven by a stacked pattern. Some combination of:
🔬 Severe mineral depletion (especially zinc, copper, iodine, and the macrominerals that regulate cellular stress and immune signaling)
🔬 Iron recycling dysfunction (poor iron utilization fuels chronic inflammation, even when ferritin “looks normal”)
🔬 Cellular membrane stress (the membranes of your cells need specific nutrients to be functional. When they're depleted, signaling breaks down system-wide)
🔬 Gut imbalance (low protective bacteria, overgrowths, often a history of antibiotics in childhood that was never repaired)
🔬 Chronically elevated stress physiology (your nervous system is part of your physiology, not “just mindset”)
🔬 Sluggish detox capacity (when the liver and gallbladder can't clear inputs efficiently, the immune system stays activated)
🔬 Hidden infections, food triggers, or environmental inputs (mold, parasites, H. pylori, etc.)
Notice something? None of those are gluten or dairy specifically. None of those are “do this 30-day cleanse.” None of those are addressed by a steroid cream.
This is the layer most providers (even the functional ones) skip.
It's also the layer that, when addressed, is what allowed me to clear my psoriasis 14 years ago and stay clear ever since.
It's the layer that allows our clients to see results their previous providers couldn't get them.
WHAT’S ACTUALLY DRIVING CHRONIC PSORIASIS
Almost never one thing. Almost always a stacked pattern
VISIBLE SKIN SYMPTOMS
are downstream of…
01
Severe mineral depletion
Zinc, copper, iodine + macrominerals that regulate cellular stress & immune signaling
02
Iron recycling dysfunction
Poor iron utilization fuels chronic inflammation. Even when ferritin "looks normal."
03
Cellular membrane stress
When cell membranes are depleted, signaling breaks down system-wide. The deepest layer.
04
Gut imbalance
Low protective bacteria, overgrowths, often unrepaired antibiotic damage from childhood.
05
Chronically elevated stress physiology
Chronically elevated stress physiology
06
Sluggish detox capacity
When liver & gallbladder can’t clear inputs efficiently, the immune system stays activated.
07
Hidden infections, food triggers, environmental inputs
Mold, parasites, H. pylori & other inputs your conventional workup doesn't test for.
Most providers (even functional ones) skip the cellular and mineral layer.
REAL CLIENT TRANSFORMATIONS
These are real Clear Skin Lab clients. Photos shared with consent. Each woman did the work for several months. Each woman had previously tried multiple other approaches without lasting results.
Client Transformation 01
Inverse psoriasis on the inner arm. Severe inflammation, broken skin, daily pain. After working through cellular foundations, mineral repletion, and addressing her specific root-cause pattern: calm, intact skin with only faint residual color. Real client. Real timeline.
Client Transformation 02
Widespread guttate-pattern psoriasis across the torso. Hundreds of inflamed lesions before. Almost entirely cleared after going through the four-pillar protocol. No biologics. No steroid taper. Inside-out work.
Client Transformation 03
Facial psoriasis with hairline and cheek involvement. Inflamed, raw, visible from across a room. After cellular and mineral repletion, gut and detox work, and consistent root-cause support: significantly calmer, less reactive skin and a face she's willing to be photographed without a filter.
THE FRAMEWORK WE USE INSIDE THE CLEAR SKIN LAB
Once I cleared my own psoriasis, I went on to build a clinical practice and eventually a team of licensed practitioners. The Clear Skin Lab now exists to walk women through this same root-cause process with structure, labs, and 1:1 guidance.
The framework has four pillars.
THE FOUR PILLARS
Inside The Clear Skin Lab Premier
PILLAR 01
Functional Lab Testing
LabCorp blood panel, HTMA, Loaded Iodine, GI MAP when indicated.
What your body is actually doing.
PILLAR 02
Six Months of 1:1 Support
Monthly sessions with your licensed CSL practitioner. Weekday chat. Reassessments.
A real human, not a protocol PDF.
PILLAR 03
A Plan Built For Your Biology
No cookie-cutter protocols. Phased work based on your labs, history & pattern.
Order matters. We work in the right one.
theclearskinlab.com
PILLAR 04
Course, Calls & Community
Full educational curriculum, group calls, recipe & mineral library, private community.
You're not doing this alone.
Pillar 01 · Functional Lab Testing
You cannot guess your way out of psoriasis. You also cannot rely on “everything looks normal” labs from your conventional doctor. We run a comprehensive workup that includes:
✓ A full LabCorp blood panel (thyroid, full iron panel, comprehensive minerals, immune markers, hormones, blood sugar)
✓ A hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) to read intracellular mineral status
✓ A loaded iodine panel
✓ A GI MAP stool test where clinically indicated
These labs together tell us what your body is actually doing, not just what's at the threshold of disease.
Pillar 02 · Six Months of Dedicated 1:1 Support
Psoriasis is not a 30-day project. It's a multi-system rebuild. Every woman in our flagship Premier program works directly with a licensed CSL practitioner for six months. That's monthly 1:1 sessions, weekday chat access, monthly reassessments, and adjustments based on how her body is actually responding.
Pillar 03 · A Plan Built Around Your Specific Biology
We don't run cookie-cutter protocols. We don't hand every woman the same supplement list or the same elimination diet. Your plan is built around your labs, your history, your life, and your specific psoriasis pattern.
It's phased. We work on cellular and mineral foundations first. Then microbial balance. Then deeper system tuning. Then barrier and skin-level support. The order matters.
Pillar 04 · Course, Calls, and Community
Education and community are part of the work. Our clients get access to our full educational curriculum, group calls, recipe and mineral resources, and a private community of other women going through the same process.
WHAT THE 6 MONTHS LOOKS LIKE
Phased work. Order matters. Honest timeline.
WHAT WE'RE SEEING IN OUR ACTUAL CLIENT DATA
Here's what 2025 looked like for our Premier clients (real numbers, not made up):
74% reported a 51% or greater reduction in their active skin issue (whether that was psoriasis, acne, eczema, hidradenitis suppurativa, rosacea, or hives) within 6 months.
95% experienced whole-body wins beyond the skin: more energy, better digestion, better sleep, healthier cycles, stronger hair and nails.
100% gained clarity on their actual root causes (whether it was minerals, hormones, gut, halogens, iron recycling, infections, stress, or some combination).
I'll say this part directly: nobody can promise you 100% clearing. Anyone who does is either lying or doesn't understand the variability of chronic skin. What we can promise, based on real client data, is that most of our clients see meaningful, measurable, sustained progress when the work is done at the right level.
And we offer something I haven't seen any other functional skin program offer: if you complete the full six months, follow your protocol, submit your monthly trackers, and show zero progress, we'll extend your program 90 days at no additional cost.
That's a promise we can stand behind because the methodology works.
WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT FROM WHAT YOU'VE TRIED
I want to be honest about who we are and who we're not.
We're not your dermatologist.
We don't prescribe medications. We work alongside, not against, your medical team. Any decisions about your prescriptions are between you and your prescriber. We respect that.
We're not a generic functional medicine clinic.
Most functional providers run labs and then plug the gaps with supplements. We use your labs, your symptoms, and your history to read the story your biology is already telling. From there, we build the actual repair plan in phases.
We're not a skincare brand.
Skincare matters (yes, those exist), but no topical can build the cellular environment your skin is asking for. That happens from the inside.
We're a clinical, science-led, functional dietitian-run practice that focuses on chronic skin issues specifically and rebuilds women from the cellular layer up.
That focus is the entire reason we're able to get the results we get.
SOME QUESTIONS WE OFTEN HEAR
-
Description tNo. We work alongside your medical team. Many of our clients keep their dermatologist relationships through the program. We never tell anyone to stop a medication or skip a medical appointment. Your care decisions stay yours.ext goes here
-
Most functional providers are generalists. We focus on chronic skin specifically and we work primarily at the cellular and mineral layer first, which most functional providers underweight or skip entirely. Many of our most successful clients came to us after working with another functional provider and not getting clear.
-
We are not an elimination-diet program. Sometimes short-term food adjustments are part of the work, but the goal is always to rebuild capacity so you can eat a wider, more nourishing diet long-term. Not to stay on a 12-foods-only protocol forever.
-
Yes. We work with women in all medication scenarios. Your prescriber stays in charge of any medication decisions. We focus on building your underlying biology so the work continues whether you choose to remain on, taper off, or stay off medications down the road.
-
Most women see meaningful skin progress between months 3 and 6 of the program. Some respond faster. Some need the full six months and then transition into our deepening phase. Healing isn't linear, and we set that expectation upfront so you're not surprised.
-
Yes. The same root-cause framework supports women with eczema, hidradenitis suppurativa, rosacea, chronic hives, and adult acne. The pattern of testing changes slightly. The methodology stays the same.
IS IT FOR YOU?
Honest answer: this isn't for everyone.
This is for you if:
You've already tried multiple approaches (medical, functional, dietary, topical) and you know something deeper is going on
You're ready to stop guessing and you want a personalized plan based on your actual biology
You're willing to do real, structured work over six months instead of looking for a 30-day fix
You have the means to invest in your health
You're an empowered buyer who makes decisions when something is the right fit, and you don't respond to fake urgency or pressure tactics (we don't use them)
This isn't for you if:
You're looking for a quick fix
You want a 30-day reset, a single supplement, or a protocol PDF
You're not ready to participate actively in your own healing
You want someone to tell you exactly what to eat for life
If you're the first kind of woman, the rest of this page is for you.
THE NEXT STEP
The next step is a 20-minute intro call.
It's not a sales pitch. It's a real conversation with our team about your skin, what you've already tried, what you're hoping for, and whether working together is actually a fit.
If it's not a fit, we'll tell you that. We don't enroll women we can't help.
If it is a fit, we'll walk you through what the next step looks like (a deeper 60-minute call where we map out your specific situation), and you can decide from there whether you want to move forward.
No pressure. No surprise pitch. Just a conversation.
ONE LAST THING
If nobody has said this to you yet, let me say it.
You're doing better than you think you are.
If you've been at this for years (or in my case, more than a decade), the fact that you're still looking, still researching, still believing that your body is capable of more is the entire reason you're going to figure this out.
The work isn't wrong. It's just been pointed at the wrong layer.
Let's point it at the right one.
xx, Robyn 💋
