Multivitamins for both women and men, hair, skin and nail vitamins, immunity vitamins, the list goes on. Pretty soon, your kitchen cabinet starts looking more like a pharmacy than a pantry.

So it's no surprise one of the questions we hear most often at Clear Skin Lab is:

"Do I need a multivitamin?"

The answer?

Maybe—but probably not for the reason you think.

We're not anti-supplement. In fact, we use supplements every day in clinical practice. But we also believe supplements should have a purpose.

Our goal isn't to create the biggest supplement routine possible. It's to build a healthy body that doesn't need unnecessary supplements in the first place. Let's talk about where we actually start.

Food Comes Before Supplements

Supplements can be incredibly helpful. But they're called supplements for a reason. They're meant to supplement an already nourishing diet—not replace one. Whole foods provide something a capsule simply can't.

When you eat foods rich in vitamins and minerals, you're also getting:

  • Protein

  • Healthy fats

  • Antioxidants

  • Polyphenols

  • Phytochemicals

  • Thousands of naturally occurring compounds that work together

Sometimes taking six separate supplements isn't necessary. The right multivitamin can provide several nutrients in appropriate amounts, helping reduce supplement load while making your routine simpler and more sustainable.

More Isn't Always Better

One big myth in the wellness world is: "If a little is good, more must be better."

Unfortunately, biology doesn't work that way. Many vitamins and minerals interact with one another. Taking large amounts of one nutrient can sometimes influence another.

Zinc and Copper

Long-term high-dose zinc supplementation can interfere with copper absorption and may eventually contribute to copper deficiency.

Vitamin D and Magnesium

Magnesium is involved in vitamin D metabolism. If magnesium intake is inadequate, the body may not activate and utilize vitamin D as efficiently.

High-Dose Vitamin C and Copper

Very large doses of supplemental vitamin C may influence copper metabolism in some individuals, although the clinical significance varies depending on the dose and overall nutritional status.

This doesn't mean these supplements are "bad”, but it means that nutrients don't work in isolation. Your body functions as an interconnected system.

Can Too Many B Vitamins Affect Your Skin?

If you've ever started a new multivitamin or B-complex and noticed your skin suddenly breaking out, you're not imagining it. While B vitamins are essential for energy production, nervous system function, and healthy red blood cells, more isn't always better—especially for acne-prone individuals.

Research has found that high-dose vitamin B12 supplementation may trigger acne in some people by altering the activity of Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes), the bacteria naturally found on our skin. These changes may increase the production of inflammatory compounds that contribute to breakouts.

There have also been reports linking high doses of vitamins B6 and B12 to acneiform eruptions—breakouts that resemble acne—particularly when taken in doses far above the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA).

Does this mean everyone should avoid B vitamins? Absolutely not.

Many people truly need additional B vitamins, especially if lab work confirms a deficiency, they're pregnant, recovering from illness, or have increased nutrient needs. Sometimes the best solution isn't eliminating B vitamins altogether—it's choosing a supplement with more appropriate doses or focusing on food-first nutrition whenever possible. Because supplements should support your health, not create a new problem to solve.

What About Methylated Vitamins?

You may have heard people say that everyone should take methylated B vitamins. The reality is a little more nuanced.

Some individuals have genetic variations, such as changes in the MTHFR gene, that may influence folate metabolism. In certain situations, healthcare providers may recommend specific forms of folate or other B vitamins based on an individual's history, lab work, and clinical picture.

For most people, though, the conversation shouldn't start with genetics. It should start with diet, symptoms, and appropriate testing when indicated.

Our Food-First Philosophy

When someone comes to us feeling depleted, we don't automatically hand them a shopping list of supplements.

We ask questions.

  • Are they eating enough protein?

  • Are they consuming a variety of colorful plants?

  • Are they getting enough B vitamin rich foods?

  • Are digestive issues affecting nutrient absorption?

  • Do their labs suggest a true deficiency?

  • Is there a life stage, such as pregnancy, where nutrient needs are higher?

The answer is always food, and sometimes the answer is supplements. Often, it's both. But the recommendation should match the person—not the latest trend.

The Bottom Line

So… do you need a multivitamin? Maybe.

If you're pregnant, trying to conceive, recovering from a deficiency, dealing with malabsorption, or using one strategically to simplify your supplement routine, a well-formulated multivitamin can be incredibly valuable.

But if you're taking one simply because you think everyone should, it may be worth taking a step back. Your plate is still the most powerful place to build nutritional health.

Whole foods provide a combination of vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, healthy fats, and plant compounds that no supplement can fully replicate.
